A Silent Night And Secure Home: How Double Glazed Doors Enhance Your Peace And Security

A good night’s sleep starts with good quality windows, but your choice of door also plays a role in giving your family a silent night and a secure home. Your front door, in particular, is your gateway to the outside world, letting in unwanted nighttime sounds and – potentially – unwanted guests, too. A good way of improving both your home’s sound insulation and security is by upgrading your doors to a composite model with security glass.

Laminated Security Glass: Many modern double-glazed doors include a layer of laminated security glass, which features a plastic interlayer between the two glass panes, making the glass more resistant to shattering and also holding the shattered pieces together more securely should someone succeed in breaking one pane. The noise and effort required for a burglar to smash through a well-made pane of security glass is normally not worth their effort – it would draw far too much unwanted attention to themselves, especially on a quiet night.

Sound Efficiency: Side-by-side with greater security comes a reduction in external noise, shielding your home from sounds that could disturb your sleep, from passing cars to wailing cats. Modern double-glazed and triple-glazed doors are well insulated by design, with the spaces between the panes significantly dampening noise from outside and preventing leakage from within the home, too. Some doors are also available with sound reducing glass, which can further improve sound insulation.

How Much Does A Double-Glazed Door Cost In The UK?

How much a double glazed door costs you depends on the material, size, and any additional security features. Some suppliers sell UPVC double glazed doors for as little as £500-£1000, but these won’t be as secure or noise reducing as many higher-quality models. At Harvey’s, we sell high-quality composite doors with double glazed security glass and a good noise reduction rating, starting from £1,200.

How much you need to pay depends on your requirements. On a remote farm or leafy suburb, noise might not be too much of an issue. However, if your home is close to a main road or a busy shopping area, it might be worth spending a bit more money on premium double glazing to improve your door’s sound insulation, and some homes may benefit from enhanced security features, such as a rigid polymer subframe, integral security board, and high-impact GRP skin. Door specifications can also be upgraded to the police-approved Secure by Design standard, giving you even less to worry about at night.

The Best Glass For Noise Reduction

We use Pilkington Toughened Glass in our doors, which is five times stronger than normal glass, and adds an extra layer of security and peace. The glass also has 3 dB or better sound insulation, creating a quieter and more peaceful environment. When mounted into a double or triple-glazed door, this toughened security glass provides a market-leading standard of quiet and security, repaying your investment with many years of restful nights.
