The Benefits Of Triple Glazing: Is It Worth It?

Traditionally, triple-glazed windows have been the go-to for homeowners blighted by excessive noise from overhead flight paths and nearby motorways. However, while exceptional sound insulation is, of course, one of the many benefits of triple glazing, there are other compelling reasons why homeowners should consider upgrading their windows – whatever the noise level in their neighbourhood. Triple glazing may add some extra to the cost of new windows, so it’s important to consider the question that many homeowners ask: is triple glazing worth it?

What Is Triple Glazing?

Triple glazing uses three panes of glass inside a sealed frame, in the same way that double-glazed windows use two. Between each pane of glass, a pocket of gas or air (such as argon) provides effective sound and thermal insulation. In triple-glazed windows, the third pane sits between the inner and outer panes, creating two air locks instead of the usual one. This drastically improves energy performance, although the efficiency of the unit can also be dictated by other factors, such as the type of gas used between the glass, the use of warm edge spacer bars, and the type of frame.

The Benefits Of Triple Glazing

To understand whether triple-glazed windows are worth the investment, it’s necessary to explore its many benefits:

1) Increased Energy Efficiency
With the future of the environment a more pressing concern than ever before, achieving higher energy efficiency is everyone’s responsibility. With most household heat escaping through windows, any steps that can be taken to minimise heat loss is clearly invaluable. Triple glazing can reduce energy loss by up to 50%, supporting the environment by reducing demand on fossil fuels and saving money on household bills.

However, if you are upgrading your windows from single glazed, or even old double glazed designs, the improvement in energy efficiency will be significant with modern double or triple glazed specifications

2) Reduced External Noise
Noise pollution can drastically affect the quality of our lives, and it’s not just in extreme circumstances, such as living in proximity to flight paths and main roads, that it can be disruptive. From local traffic to heavy industry, noise can be intrusive, damaging homeowners’ sleep and downtime. Triple glazing is highly effective in eliminating external noise: the more panes of glass, the better noise reduction will be.

There are, however, double glazed glass specifications that also offer increased noise protection with the use of laminated glass and special coatings which can often answer the needs of a noisy position.

3) Less Risk Of Condensation And Cold Patches

Double glazing has largely eradicated the problem of severe condensation on the inside of windows that was commonplace with single-glazed windows. However, some cold and damp patches are still persistent in some homes even with double glazing. Triple-glazed windows are effective at preventing these problems, sustaining a more consistent internal temperature without the need for the overrunning of central heating.

Triple-Glazing: A Price Worth Paying?

On average, triple-glazed windows tend to be approximately 20% more expensive than double glazing, with double glazing prices starting from £650, and will be fully fitted (including VAT). However, by opting for triple glazing, you may well save more money over time in lower heating costs. It is a tricky question to answer and depends very much on each individual circumstance.
